Addie is 14 months...

At 14 months Addie is doing a lot of things....

  • babbling while opening pages of picture books

  • going to bed on her own mostly every night around 8 pm and waking around 7:30

  • still having one bottle of whole milk before bed

  • saying words like puppy, shoe, sock, baby, ball, go, mama and dada

  • climbing stairs... a lot of them

  • eating everything that is put in front of her

  • showing anger when she doesn't get something she wants

  • taking a morning and afternoon nap still

  • playing in the bathtub

  • smiling to show her 3.5 teeth

  • and looking fabulous in her size 18 months clothing

    And not doing others...

  • walking.

  • giving up her pacifier. (okay, this one is our fault)

    Likes and Dislikes...

Jackson likes: playing sharks at school, the color blue, drinking juice, wearing Woody (Toy Story) socks, anything pirates, trying to write his name, slumber parties at Grandma's, chinese food, watching Cars, swimming at the MCC with Dad, spiking his hair and playing Playmobil.

Jackson doesn't like: riding a bike with training wheels, taking long naps, pizza, grown-up toothpaste and sleeping alone.

Addie likes: feeding herself, cheese, tickles, pickles, dancing to music, swinging, hanging upside-down, green beans, playing with balls, bread, taking baths, eating paper, Jackson's bean bag chair, and her pacifier.

Addie doesn't like: baby gates, being hungry and teething.

    Camping at Lake Elmo

Well we took another camp adventure all the way to Lake Elmo! Along for the ride were: Grandma Pam and Bill, Mell, Terry and Luke, Tinker, Nancy and Malak. We've had some bad luck camping, but this one takes the cake. To begin with I have allergies, I don't like to admit this because I've never had allergies. Well it's time to face facts: whatever is in the air outside in August makes me sneeze and sneeze and then sneeze again. And while I sneeze I itch my poor throbbing eyes.

Things were going pretty smooth, the camper was set up, we'd had dinner and Addie took a bath in the dishpan! After dinner though we had some visitors at our campsite; the good ol' mosquito and friends came out to play and they didn't play fair and in the end we forfeited and went to bed early. After quite the task of getting kids to sleep in 90 degree temperatures with high humidity, we woke in the morning and got a good start to the day, however my allergies were getting worse. We enjoyed a bike ride, ate some snacks and headed to the beach. We had a lovely time swimming and the kids were great.

At this point I had made many runs back and forth to the bathroom with Jackson, which was a block away. Sometimes I would run with him in my arms, sometimes I would bike him down in the trailer, sometimes my mom or Ron would take him. Sometimes he would make it in time, sometimes he would not... wait... I think more often than not... he wouldn't make it. Oh wait, let's clarify: he never made it!

At 5:30 pm on Saturday night we were plum out of underwear or pants for the boy. We were frustrated, sneezing parents and had already decided that we would leave after bonfire that night. And then he pooped. He pooped and we packed up the camper.

We got kids in the car, hitched up the trailer, said our sad goodbyes and off we went, looking forward to our air-conditioned house and beds. While Addie screamed (too tired and hungry) Jackson fell asleep before we even left the park.

Thump, Thump, Thump!!! What the hell is that???

    A flat tire.

You have got to be kidding me.

    You're not?

    Damn.

    Flat tire.

We pull over and while the sun beats down on him, Ron works to change our flat tire on the trailer (without a jack). I hold a screaming Addie. Wait, she's screaming AND grunting.

    Lovely. The girl has pooped.

So I change a stinky diaper and Ron finishes the tire change.

    The Birthday Girl

We had a glorious day for Addie's first birthday party... the weather could not have been better, breezy and sunny. Addie started the party off well in her pink tutu dress with flower petals inside, she welcomed family from both sides:

Bumpa, Grandma Pam, Bill, Nancy, Tinker, Donnie, Candy, Mell, Terry, Josh, Lisa, Luke, Dame, Tasha, Grandma Jan, Great Grandpa Kolar, Jim, Steve, Kathy, Mike, June, Linda and Chris.

We served up Jimmy Johns for dinner (thanks cousin Dame!)and had a beautiful cake. Addie ate the large chocolate cake set in front of her like it was nothing. She was neither surprised that she had a cake to herself or bothered to share with her brother. She was however, sad when it was taken away!

    Addie at Three Weeks...

Addie has been a good baby so far. We are all still adjusting to the limited amounts of sleep we are getting, but are relived that she is a pretty good sleeper.

    Family Update...

Jackson's bruising: I am thrilled to report that Jackson's current bruises are going away and he's getting only a few more. He looks so much better than he did a few weeks ago and even last week. If this Monday his numbers are above 50,000, we'll be able to switch to every other week testing.

Addie's sleeping schedule: Addie is getting into a bit of a night routine. And yes I do know that now that I have this figured out it will change. But for now, she is doing some cluster feeding between 7 and 9, then I wake her up at 10 or 10:30 for a final feeding, she sleeps for 3 or 4 hours then! Somewhere around 2:00 she wakes again for a feeding and a diaper change and then Ron spends some time getting her back to sleep. At 5:00 she wakes again for a feeding and a diaper change and then spends the rest of the morning asleep next to me in bed.

Kitchen Remodel: Yeah, what better time to decide to finish the remodel in our kitchen... Luckily, Ron is taking this one on by himself. We are adding cabinets to the other side of our kitchen, replacing our microwave with an under-the-counter model and switching the stove and fridge.

Ron: He's keeping busy with the kitchen and helping to take care of our family. But in addition, it's time for Fall ball, which means double headers every Tuesday night, it gives him a chance to hang out with the guys and get some exercise for a bit.

Sara: I'm nothing more than "MOM" these days. I like being home with the kids and finding creative ways to keep Jackson busy and interacting. We are having fun, but when Addie's routine becomes a little more predictable, I'm looking forward to a dinner out with just my husband.

    Latest platelet count...

Results from Monday's blood test are in: Jackson is now up to 5,000 platelets. Not great, but at least they are headed in the right direction, up. It's still a long ways off from the 150,000 needed to be at the low end of normal. Jackson is still in the extremely dangerous range until we are above 10,000, so we'll be spending all of our time keeping him as safe as possible. We'll go back on Monday again for another blood test.

Jackson has officially been pulled from childcare and I am on leave from work, hoping that Addie stays put for just another week.

Speaking of Addie, I had a doctor appointment yesterday and am still sitting the same. 80% and dialated 2cm. I think Addie knows that it'd be helpful if she waited a bit longer to join the family, though we can't wait to meet her!

Also yesterday, Jackson and I got out to Como Zoo. It was a safe trip to take, mostly in the stroller and Jackson was able to get some visual stimulation, especially in the butterfly garden. I dressed the poor kid in pants even on such a hot day to cover a few of his bruises, but we did route over to the misting machine and get cooled down before taking in the Sparky Show!

    Baby Addie Updated...

Last week I had a doctor appt. where my fundal measurement was at 31, small for where I should have been at 36 weeks. So, on Tuesday I had an ultrasound. Baby Addie is growing just fine, her heartrate was 150 bpm, she was 6lbs 2ounces in the 42% for a baby her age. Today's fundal measurement: 35.

This week's appt. came back with a postivie Group B strep test. The transmission of Group B strep can be prevented, but it does mean that I need to ideally start antiobiotics four hours before she is born. How we will time this, I don't know!

The test results also provided an insight to why I am so incredibly tired these last weeks, why I've been having headaches and trouble breathing. I was just chalking it all up to the pregnancy, but in fact I am anemic, hemoglobin level 9. So I'll be starting some iron supplements to try to combat that.

I am also 2 centimeters dialated and 80% effaced, but that doesn't really give any clues to when labor will start... it just means I am progressing. I have also not gained any weight in the last two weeks, I told the doctor it's because there is no room for food!

    A trip to the hospital...

When I woke up yesterday I was feeling fine, but on my way to work I was starting to feel a little funny. After settling in at my desk and starting to dig in to work, I noticed some odd cramping going on. I tried to drink water, switch positions, but I just couldn't get comfortable, it felt mostly like menstrual cramps that would change in intensity. I went for a walk, to see if a change in position would help, but it only seemed to make things worse.

I decided to call Ron and run it by him. He thought it was something I should call my OB Nurse about, so I dialed up Andrea who wanted to know how soon I could be in the clinic. Ugh... on my way to the clinic. There they did a urine culture that came out clean and Andrea checked my cervix, dialated to 1, 80% effaced. I guess this was not good, when the numbers were ran by my doctor he thought it best if I went across the street to the hospital to be monitored for a few hours.

I headed over to St. John's hospital, called Ron and checked in. They hooked me up to a monitor to measure contractions and baby's heart rate. Because I came in around lunch time they handed me a food menu... best part about hospital stays! I ordered up my lunch and was starving when it arrived. Ron came through the door to keep me company while I lie in the hospital bed. Since the Michael Jackson memorial was taking place, we flipped on the TV and watched the coverage from the Staples Center in LA.

Ron asked some good questions of the nurse who told us that at this point the baby would be okay, but would need to stay in special care for a while to mature her lungs if delivered now. We were also told that there were things that could be done to put off labor, but that most likely I was looking at a couple weeks of bed rest. A million things ran through my mind, but mostly: How was I going to take care of a 2.5 year old on bedrest?? Would he understand that I couldn't pick him up anymore? Would he be sad that I wouldn't be able to play with him? Poor kid.

After two hours of monitoring the contractions were becoming a bit more intense and my cervix was checked again, but this time the nurse thought I was only about 60% effaced, good news. However, after that the contractions sped up and seemed to come closer together, while not painful, it was obvious that they were contractions. After monitoring again for another couple hours they consulted Dr. Ashford who decided three rounds of Terbutaline was the way to go.

The needle went in and almost immediately I began shaking like a leaf, a side effect of the medication. But not long after this first injection the contractions seemed to disapate. After 20 minutes the nurse came in to check my pulse which was at 117 just under the 120 mark of not being able to give another injection. After the second injection the shaking and racing heart heightened, but again the contractions were minimal. Another 20 minutes and another injection was given.

Dr. Ashford came over to see me and was happy with the last hour of monitoring, he checked my cervix which had not progressed... a great sign, still 1cm. Contractions were just Braxton Hicks and nothing to be concerned about. I am now 34 weeks and some practices do not choose to stop labor at 34 weeks, but Dr. Ashford does. However, by next week, Terbutaline would not be administered and I'd be allowed to deliver 5 weeks early. So, doctor Ashford sent me home... yay... no restrictions!

Today I am home just laying a bit low after an eventful day yesterday, trying to get rid of the massive headache and nausea that the Terbutaline caused and will be full speed ahead... starting tomorrow.
